BANGKOK (REUTERS) – Thailand reported 50 new coronavirus infections, taking its tally to 322, a health official said on Friday (March 20), with the majority located in Bangkok, the capital.
A group of 41 new cases is linked to earlier infections, while another group of nine centres on overseas arrivals and contact with foreigners, Mr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, director-general of the disease control department, told a news conference.
Thailand has had one death in the outbreak, with 43 patients having recovered and gone home, while 278 are still in hospital.
Over 100 of the overall number of cases are linked to clusters at boxing stadium events and bars.
These figures may climb as more than 500 people could have been at the boxing events, according to Taweesilp Witsanuyotin, a Health Ministry spokesman. A number of cases are working-aged men in their 30s, Taweesilp added.
Infections in Thailand have jumped more than sevenfold in March, prompting the government to temporarily shut schools and universities, as well as many entertainment and recreational venues. People are also being advised to stay at home as much as possible and avoid non-essential trips.
