Businesses clawing back from COVID-19 devastated by fire

A factory in Sydney’s south has been ravaged by a building fire, devastating the businesses that operate out of it.
The fire broke out at 10pm overnight in Kirrawee.

But the building was wrecked, despite dozens of firefighters powering through the night.
Business owner Camila Arteaga told 9News the loss was “devastating” for the family business.
“We’ve been here for a long time,” she said. “This is like our house, our home.”
NSW Fire and Rescue Acting Superintendent Scott Dodson said due to the nature of the businesses, including an upholstery company, there was a lot of fuel for the fire.

Ultimately, six Sydney small businesses have been destroyed, just as COVID-19 restrictions were set to ease.
Ms Arteaga’s Tropical Fruits Australia had just started bringing a number of staff back to work.
“Some of the cafes have started doing takeaways, so slowly we were starting to get a bit better with this COVID-19 and now this is happening, it’s just devastating,” she said.
