NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned the state not to get complacent during the pandemic, despite there being fewer daily cases of coronavirus than a week ago.
“The worst is yet to hit us,” the premier told media on Saturday.
“I’m not suggesting we will be in this position forever, but until we find a vaccine, we have to live with this.
“Not necessarily the restrictions we have now… but unless we do that, more people will get sick and more people will lose their lives.”
There are currently 2857 cases of COVID-19 in NSW, and overnight there was another death, taking the state’s death toll to 23.
NSW Chief Health Medical Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the progress has been promising but without a vaccine, they were not yet in the clear.
“Our approach has been to buy us time, to get our health system prepared, and to also make sure that we have got those essential tools that will need to tackle COVID-19,” Dr Chant said.
“We are currently seeing low rates of suppressed transmission in the community. And that is pleasing.
“But in the end, you have got to look at when will a vaccine be available, how we will navigate our role through that, where is the optimum settings, as the premier has indicated, we are currently considering what the position in relation to school will be in term two.
“This is going to be a long journey and with the strategies that have been put in place in Australia, we should be incredibly pleased with the outcomes. It has bought us time to reflect on how we are going to navigate the journey ahead.”
