Three popular Sydney beaches which were shut again just days after emerging from a coronavirus lockdown will now be re-opened – but only for three hours a day.
Maroubra, Coogee and Clovelly beaches were re-opened today for exercise purposes but Randwick City Council warned they would be “closely monitored”.
At 1pm today, the council deemed people were using the areas for leisure purposes, and the beaches were shut completely.
There was also an apparent stand-off with one swimmer who initially refused to leave the water.
A council spokesperson told nine.com.au the beaches would re-open tomorrow, but the same conditions would apply.
A later statement from the council said that the beaches would only be open from 6am-9am for exercise only on Saturday and Sunday.
The situation will be “reassessed” on Monday.
“While we’re expecting warm weather conditions this weekend, people should not be planning a day at the beach,” stated Mayor Danny Said.
“The stay at home public health orders remain in place, which require people to not leave their homes unless it is for essential reasons, including exercise.
“This means people should not be hopping in their cars to travel to our beaches.”
The beaches were initially re-opened on Monday after the coronavirus lockdown.
All other beaches in the Randwick City Council area will remain closed over the weekend.
